Cardboard, matches

These matchboxes are decorated only with the dark red phosphorus ink that's used for striking matches. Designed by American product designer Shane Schneck and Swedish graphic designer Clara von Zweigbergk, the Strike Matchbox gives prime position to the striking surface, which is normally squeezed onto one side. "We simply flipped the space devoted to the activity of creating a flame," says Schneck. "99% of matchboxes are used only for advertising."

Strike makes a virtue of necessity by moving the strike pad from the side of the box to the top surface, turning the strike pad into a decorative graphic element in its own right. The collection numbers large and small boxes in various formats and bright colours that make Strike a convincing reinterpretation of an everyday icon and earned it Wallpaper’s Design Award in 2014.
