Kähler's money banks exemplify unique, Danish design. They are designed to resemble so-called ‘fable fish’ and are available in three different coloured glazes. Each of the money banks have meticulously hand decorated eyes and a coin slot on their backs, while the money can be retrieved via a hole in the bottom, which is sealed with a cork plug.

In the early 1920s, Kähler’s talented artisans constantly worked to improve their technique, both in relation to forming and design as well as the development and application of glazes. It was from this creative process that the famous Sparedyr money boxes - shaped as imaginary animals, came about.

The story goes that one evening after work, Nils Kähler decided to have some fun with his assistants and began creating fun and inspiring money boxes out of ceramics as a way of honing their technique. What started as nothing more than a creative pastime became part of Kähler’s official repertoire when one day, the legendary Herman A. Kähler (Nils’ father) spotted these small ceramic creatures in the workshop and saw the potential in them.

Soon thereafter, the Sparedyr, with their beautiful colours, unique shapes and creative decorations became some of the most popular products in the history of the workshop. It is this legacy and tradition of creating different, challenging and unexpected designer objects from ceramics that the new collection is based on.

Available in Grey Blue, Yellow and Rose.

The story of Kähler began in 1839, when the Holstein potter Herman J. Kähler opened a a little pottery workshop in the city of Næstved. However, it was not until his son, Herman A. Kähler, took over the workshop in 1875 that the ceramics adventure gathered speed. With production of international art ceramics, the foundation was laid for one of the great success stories in Danish ceramics.

The historic Kähler workshop has been a meeting place for many of the very greatest Danish artists for over 175 years. The experiences of craftsmen such as Thorvald Bindesbøll, Svend Hammershøi and Kai Nielsen have been passed down from generation to generation, providing technique and mastery using the versatile moulding potential of clay.
