Mr Jackdoor Door Wedge by Espergaerde
Mr Jackdoor is a beautifully handcrafted door wedge and a perfect companion, who sits patiently on his base when not in use. The simple abstract bird shape is toylike yet engaging, so you won’t want to hide him away when not being used.
This range of Mr Jackdoors have been produced in England exclusively for Really Well Made in a limited and individually numbered edition of 100.
The Jackdoors are made from sustainably sourced Yew timber that comes from trees felled as part of conservation work on the southwest coast of the Isle of Wight. Once felled the wood has been left to dry naturally for over two years before being planked by hand. Certain areas of the timber are then selected for their suitability, Yew is perfect because it is very strong as it grows so slowly (Pontius Pilate is said to have played in one that is still growing in Perthshire, Scotland!). The timber is cut, before being sanded by hand. Beeswax polish is then applied to preserve the wood and bring out the grain. The polish comes from respected beekeeper Mary Case who has been tending to her beehives for over twenty years on the Isle of Wight, helping the sustainability of the product and additionally supporting British craftsmanship.
The most wonderful thing about Yew is the grain. Because it grows so slowly the tree goes through many twists and turns that are reflected in the patterns in the grain. The contrast between the heart and the sapwood is also often quite striking. All this means each Mr Jackdoor is truly unique! Each comes in a gift box with a printed story of the product and it's provenance.
