The iconic Eames Lounge Chair by Vitra was originally designed by husband and wife duo Charles and Ray Eames in 1956 as a birthday present for filmmaker Billy Wilder. Their inspiration came from one question ‘Why don’t we make an updated version of the old English club chair?’ With this comment, Charles Eames initiated the development of the Lounge Chair. The aim was to satisfy the desire for an amply proportioned chair that combined ultimate comfort with the highest quality materials and craftsmanship to provide the highest level of seating pleasure possible.

This supremely comfortable lounge chair has cushioned leather seat pads and a wood veneered plywood shell on aluminium supports and a die-cast aluminium base. All chairs are supported by a five-pointed die-cast aluminium base with a built-in swivel mechanism. The matching ottomans have an identical but four-pointed base in a fixed position. The aluminium base is available in a polished or black painted version.

This lounge chair provides luxurious and ultimate comfort via its signature reclined positioning, superior pivoting, ample padding and contouring, and the shape that flexes to fit each user. The Eames lounge chair has become one of the significant furniture designs of the 20th century. As comfortable as it is beautiful, this timeless piece is a design that all generations love.

Since the lounge chair first went into production, the average person's height has increased worldwide by nearly 10cm. In close coordination with the Eames Office, Vitra developed the new larger version so that taller people, too, can enjoy the same exceptional comfort that Charles and Ray Eames intended with their original 1956 design. The pricing and dimensions on this product listing is for the new dimension chair and ottoman. If you would like to purchase the original design please get in touch.

Charles and Ray Eames

This product is designed by
Charles and Ray Eames

Charles and Ray were a married couple who also partnered to fundamentally change the way furniture and buildings are designed and manufactured - playing a large role at the inception of the Modernist movement. They worked with Herman Miller and then later Vitra in the 1950’s to pioneer new technologies in moulded plywood, plastic resin and wire mesh products.

Charles was by highly influenced by the Finnish Architect Eliel Saarinen who encouraged Eames to move to Michigan in 1938 to further study Architecture at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He became friends with Eliel’s son Eero (also an Architect) and together they created a prize-winning furniture entry for New York’s MOMA museum...
